Web/Mobile Application Developer
Indiana Public Media (WFIU/WTIU)
20-25 hrs/week
Pay range: $12-18 DOE

Position Summary
The Web/Application Developer works collaboratively with the WFIU and WTIU online staff and interns and is responsible for the back-end programming and maintenance of IndianaPublicMedia.org and other WFIU and WTIU websites (in an Apache environment running WordPress MU). Additionally, he or she designs, builds and codes scalable web/mobile applications and WordPress plugins, and assists in the production of mashups, data visualizations and other interactive features.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and coding of web and mobile applications (including but not limited to WordPress plugins, mashups, data visualizations, interactive maps and timelines, iPhone or other mobile applications) (70%)
  • Database maintenance and optimization (25%)
  • Other duties as assigned (5%)

Required Qualifications

  • 3 years of experience with XHTML/CSS, PHP/MySQL, and Javascript/jQuery/AJAX. Bachelors degree in computer science, informatics, or equivalent experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience with WordPress (preferably including WordPress MU and WordPress API hooks and plug-in development).
  • Knowledge of the Linux/Apache environment, including regular expressions, mod_rewrite and MySQL database optimization.
  • High degree of web savvy and demonstrated knowledge of current trends in web/mobile application development
  • Experience with Subversion or similar version control systems.

Preferred

  • Any of the following: Java, Python/Django, Perl, C/C++/Objective-C, shell scripting
  • Knowledge of third party APIs (Facebook Connect, Google Maps, Flickr, etc.)
  • Previous experience developing mobile applications (especially native application development for the iPhone)
  • Interest in and commitment to the core values of public service media

    Part-Time Work-Study Positions

    Volunteer/Internship Opportunities in Radio

    Volunteers and interns provide a valuable contribution to WFIU’s on-going mission and daily operations. The following positions require dedication and a reliable time commitment. Some computer ability is preferable. The station will train all positions. Volunteers are chosen based on experience, interviews are required.

    NOTE: Very little volunteer and intern work at the station involves announcing (DJing). If you are interested in having your own radio show, contact WFHB Community Radio or WIUX Student Radio.

    Volunteer/Internship Opportunities
    (Indiana Public Media)

    Our internships are unpaid, but we offer college credit and an excellent, highly collaborative work environment. We prefer that our interns work on-site with us in Bloomington, Indiana, but some positions can be performed remotely (inquire about specifics if you’re interested).

    WFIU Jazz Librarian Internship

    Hours: 12 per week (3 credit hours)

    Job Description: Maintain the WFIU jazz audio library and database used by programming and production staff. Assist in program playlist archival. Additional projects may include facilitating the migration of the physical library to a digital collection, assisting with a semester music sale, as well as minor projects within the classical music department.

    Qualifications: Ability to work methodically, accurately, and independently to deadlines in a busy environment. Formal knowledge of all aspects of jazz music and its reference materials preferred. Competency in database management and audio software favorable. Preference given to those with strong computer skills.

    WFIU PSA and Community Events Internship

    Hours: 3-9 per week (1-2 credit hours)

    Job Description: WFIU regularly airs announcements about events and opportunities presented by non-profit organizations across Southern and Central Indiana. WFIU also maintains an online events calendar, where more extensive information may be found. Candidate would assist the public service director in maintaining the online calendar, from which the daily announcements for broadcast are generated. The intern would edit event submissions to the website from outside organizations, and add announcements of events that come in through other channels (e-mail, fax, mail, phone). Additional projects in on-air production are also available.

    Qualification: The candidate should have computer skills, adequate to navigate web-based event calendar software. Excellent writing skills and attention to detail are essential. Familiarity with public radio and the geographical areas in which we broadcast preferred.
