Frank Sinatra on V-Disc

This week on Afterglow it’s “Frank Sinatra on V-Disc.” . These were non-commercial recordings that were made for, and distributed exclusively to, soldiers, sailors, and other American military personnel serving in World War II. They were made at a time when there was a recording ban in the music industry, and so they offer us a unique look at certain stages of various performers’ careers. The V-discs we’ll hear capture Frank Sinatra at a still-youthful time in his professional life, and they also reveal how his famous ballad-style with arranger Axel Stordahl was beginning to evolve. Other performers featured on this edition of Afterglow include Ruth Price, Billy Eckstine, Warne Marsh, Patricia Barber, and Jim Hall. “Frank Sinatra on V-Disc” airs Friday, January 5 at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU.
