WFIU Presents
Afterglow
Bill Evans 1961-62
This
week on Afterglow well feature the music that pianist
Bill Evans recorded in late 1961 and early 1962, following the death
of his bassist Scott La Faro. The two of them, along with drummer
Paul Motian, had made recordings in the summer of 1961 that would
eventually set the template for the sound of the modern piano-jazz
trio. Just a few days after those albums were taped at New York
Citys Village Vanguard, La Faro died in a car crash. Evans
was devastated and withdrew from recording and active playing for
several months afterwards. In the second hour of Afterglow
well feature Evans return to the studio as a sideman
with singer Mark Murphy, flutist Herbie Mann, pianist and composer
Tadd Dameron, and vibraphonist Dave Pike, in addition to his work
as a leader, on a solo session and the LPs Moonbeams and
How My Heart Sings. In the first hour well have music
from Dianne Reeves, Lee Konitz, Brad Mehldau with Renee Fleming,
Carmen McRae, Illinois Jacquet, and more. Afterglow airs
Friday, January 12 at 10:05 p.m. on WFIU.
