This week on Afterglow we’ll be featuring some of the dynamic small-group recordings that tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell and trombonist Al Grey made in the early 1960s. Former members of the late-1950s Count Basie big band, Mitchell and Grey recorded a compelling mix of standards, originals, and pieces by artists such as Randy Weston and Melba Liston. We’ll also hear music from Dakota Staton, Gloria Lynne, Pat Metheny with Brad Mehldau, Lou Rawls, Keith Jarrett, and more.
