Hoagy Carmichael
November 23, 2007

This week on Afterglow we continue our recently-founded annual tradition of playing the music of Hoagy Carmichael on the Friday after Thanksgiving. (Hoagy was born November 22, 1899, so his birthday always falls close to the holiday.) We’ll feature interpretations of Carmichael classics from performers such as Art Blakey (with Freddie Hubbard soloing on “Skylark”), Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Sheila Jordan, Nat King Cole, Frank Morgan, Nina Simone, and many others. In the second hour of the program we’ll spotlight a rare 1939 radio broadcast from the Lyric Theater in Indianapolis, with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Hoagy joined by a special guest—Hoagy’s piano-playing mother LIda--for a blazing rendition of “Maple Leaf Rag.” Other artists include Mark Murphy, the Four Freshmen, and Bob Dorough.

For more about Hoagy Carmichael, visit the “Hoagy!” link on the Afterglow home page.

Afterglow airs every Friday evening at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU. Broadcasts are made available for listening at any time the following week in the Afterglow archives.
