Kenton '56
December 7, 2007

This week on Afterglow we’ll feature previously unreleased concert recordings from Stan Kenton’s 1956 “Contemporary Concepts” orchestra—one of the more swinging Kenton units, featuring soloists such as saxophonists Lennie Niehaus, Jack Nimitz, and Bill Perkins, trombonist Carl Fontana, and drummer Mel Lewis, tackling a dozen of arranger Bill Holman’s charts. We’ll also hear new music from singer Jackie Ryan and sides from Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Chet Baker and more. “Kenton ‘56” airs Friday, Dec. 7 at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU.

Afterglow airs every Friday evening at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU. Broadcasts are made available for listening at any time the following week in the Afterglow archives.
