George Walker
Chief Announcer

George WalkerGeorge Walker plays classical music throughout the day during the week. He also does arts interviews and reviews plays and operas.

There's not a lot new to report, but if you're curious...George did finish rereading Moby Dick last summer. Since he's gone through a detective phase with the Tony Hillerman books, a couple of the Robichaux novels and all of the Mathew Scudder series. At the moment, he's back to science fiction and fantasy with Larry Niven. By the way, at the moment (April 28th) he has a beard, but he's not redoing the picture, because the beard comes off with the barley harvest in a little under two months.

George has worked for WFIU since volunteering to read news in the summer of 1967. "Back then things were a little simpler. But, I wouldn't call them 'the good old days.' We didn't come on the air until one in the afternoon. There was no Morning Edition, no All Things Considered and no Classical Music through the Night."
Besides programming and announcing, George likes to talk directly with listeners. "It's great to get some direct feedback about what we're playing. I like to give people more information about pieces that they've heard. And I really enjoy talking with listeners who say that they'd like to hear more of this or that type of music. Sometimes these calls put me onto a composer or ensemble that I've not heard before."

George enjoys spending time at home with his family. He likes to sing, play the guitar and read.
