Art Davis R.I.P.

Art DavisReports have been circulating on the Internet for the past several days that bassist Art Davis had passed away–confirmation now from the Los Angeles Times. Some good discussion ongoing over at Organissimo about Davis’ work with Max Roach, John Coltrane (his most famous association; right now I’m listening to Ole, which features Davis and fellow bassist Reggie Workman, a broiling double-bass combination that Coltrane briefly experimented with… anticipating, perhaps, the Elvin Jones-Rashied Ali double-drum attack five years later?) and others. The Times piece gives a decent overview of Dr. Davis’ life, music, and work; it’s already clear that he’s going to be much-missed by many jazz fans and fellow musicians, and that he was respected and admired for more than just his considerable talent.
